Capacity building in Plantomics

In a context of increasing climate change, global agriculture must find alternatives to chemical fertilisers and pesticides ecologically unsustainable, in order to meet the increasing demand for food. In the face of this challenge, advanced tools for plant biotechnology and especially omics technologies offer great potential for devising sustainable solutions for the agriculture of the future.

The emergence of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has generated large amounts of data in areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics.

These omics tools serve to:

  • Develop systems biology approaches toward linking genes/proteins/metabolites to specific function(s)
  • Accelerate plant breeding programs for improving crop traits (i.e. stress tolerance, high nutritional value)
  • Assess to quality, and nutritional composition of food crops.
The overall objective of the INPLANTOMICS  project is to provide scientific knowledge on omics technologies at the University of Sfax, in collaboration with a solid network of universities and institutes, to i) strengthen the plant science community and related stakeholders and ii) promote sustainable crop production, healthy agro-products and food security in an ever-changing environment.

Up-skilling programs

Conferences and workshops on:
- plant omics data generation, processing and interpretation
- best practices for crop breeding and sanitation, micropropagation, seed quality, growth promotion, and plant phenotyping

img

Research

Research will try to answer critical crop tolerance to environmental stresses issues for NA countries. Crops of choice are local wheat varieties, severely threatened by drought and salinity to develop resilient crop varieties.

img

Education

Generate educational material on latest plant omics technologies targeting Master and PhD students. New modules will be integrated in Master and PhD curricula and online courses will be made available

National Network for Agri-food sector

Create a national network gathering scientists, professionals, breeders, NGOs, farmers and policy makers with the goal to ensure sustainability of agri-food sector, food security and quality, and promotion of healthy nutrition.

What are plantomics ?

Omics group different  innovative technologies that deal with large amount of datasets resulting from high throughput sequencing or phenoytping approaches. Plantomics provide innovative solutions to the meet the increasing demand for food.
